Board of Directors
Darius Brubeck, President
Pianist and composer Darius Brubeck, initiated the first University Jazz Studies Degree at an African university. He taught at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa until 2005. Now based in England, he tours internationally with The Darius Brubeck Quartet and Brubecks Play Brubeck. In November 2018, the DBQ played 6 cities in Poland reprising Dave Brubeck’s historic tour of 1958. Career highlights include a commissioned work for Wynton Marsalis’s Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, co-composed with the late Zim Ngqawana, and performances of his arrangements with the London Symphony Orchestra. He also has been a Fulbright visiting professor in Romania and Turkey and two of his compositions are currently prescribed for the Royal Schools’ worldwide syllabus.
Richard S. Jeweler, Treasurer
Richard S. Jeweler is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley and Stanford Law school. He has been the attorney for the Brubeck Family for over 45 years. Throughout that time he has been actively involved as manager of the Brubeck Family’s music publishing company and other projects in the music and recording business.
Theresa Brubeck, Secretary
Theresa (Tish) Brubeck began her career as a paralegal and became the Legal Administrator of a law firm in Connecticut. After 20 years of managing staff and attorneys, she decided to apply her administrative skills in the field of music management, supporting her husband Chris Brubeck by managing his groups, the Brubeck Brothers Quartet and Triple Play. Tish worked closely with Dave and Iola Brubeck, working with their publishing company and preparing and inventorying their archives, among other things. Chris and Tish also have their own publishing company, Soulessence Music, for which Tish manages printing, renting, sales, licensing, and commission contracts. Chris and Tish also have a record company, Blue Forest Records, and Tish has overseen the release of a dozen titles in cd and digital formats, some of which releases have spent months in the Top 10 of national jazz radio playlists.
Catherine A. R. Brubeck, Board Member
Catherine A. R. Brubeck entered the jazz world by working for Mercer Ellington on Special Projects. This included a major “Ellington is Forever” concert in New York City, in which Dave, Darius, Chris and Dan Brubeck participated. She later worked as Dave Brubeck’s PA and, in 1983, she and Darius went to South Africa, her homeland. Darius established Jazz Studies at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, the first degree of its kind in Africa and together they created the internationally known Centre for Jazz and Popular Music. Catherine fundraised for and organized 5 student groups’ attendance at IAJE Conferences.
Chris Brubeck, Board Member
A Grammy-nominated composer, Chris Brubeck has distinguished himself as a multi-faceted performer and creative force, creating an impressive body of symphonic work while maintaining a demanding touring and recording schedule with two groups: The Brubeck Brothers, and Triple Play, an acoustic trio featuring Chris on piano, bass and trombone, guitarist Joel Brown and harmonica player Peter Madcat Ruth. Chris also performs as a soloist playing his trombone concertos with orchestras, and is an in-demand composer. He has served as Artist in Residence with orchestras and colleges in America, coaching, lecturing, and performing with students and faculty. Chris (along with his siblings), is a founding director of “Brubeck Living Legacy” a non-profit founded by the Brubeck family to honor and continue the legacy of Dave and Iola Brubeck.
Daniel Brubeck, Board Member
Daniel (Dan) Brubeck has toured the international music circuit since his early teens as the leader of his own groups and as a featured soloist with many of the world‘s top symphonies, pop and jazz artists. He was producer and drummer for the 1993 Grammy-nominated Trio Brubeck album. Career highlights include his performance in the 1996 annual Grammy Awards as well as the 2009 Kennedy Center Honors when Dave Brubeck received that prestigious award. Recently, The Dan Brubeck Quartet was nominated for the highly coveted JUNO Award. His other group, The Brubeck Brothers Quartet has five critically acclaimed CD’s to their credit.
Catherine Brubeck Yaghsizian, Founding Board Member
(1953-2022)
Catherine Brubeck Yaghsizian is Dave and Iola’s only daughter. Growing up in an artistic family was wonderful for a young girl interested in dance, music, art and drama. She pursued a degree in Theology and went on to teach and do mission work in California where she met her husband, Arne. They settled in Connecticut near Dave and Iola, continued in Christian mission work and founded a music-based charity, Jazz’d4Life, which they ran together until Arne’s passing in 2012. Catherine recently retired and has written a novel, writes poetry and children’s stories.
